Am I right in understanding " Mrs. Clinton has gained stream among progressives" reading below?

Mrs. Clinton, who talked positively about the deal in her memoir, “Hard Choices,” is now getting criticized for flip-flopping, but for doing so after a candidate has gained steam among progressives.

I read the article this was taken from. It said, "But politically, her opposition came after Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, her main rival in public polls at the moment, had already drawn support from the left in part because of his long-held criticism of the deal. Mrs. Clinton, who talked positively about the deal in her memoir, “Hard Choices,” is now getting criticized for flip-flopping, but for doing so after a candidate has gained steam among progressives."

I believe it means she did it after Bernie Sanders gained steam among progressives. I don't believe she is gaining steam among progressives at this point.

Lorikeet:
THank you.
My next question is about "but for." in below.

is now getting criticized for flip-flopping, but for doing so

What does "but for" mean? If "but for" is replaced by "especially for", I can understand. Or does this "but" mean "only"/

My addional explanation on my question.

Criticized for flip-flopping , but for doing so...

The above is to be described as,

Criticized for A , but for B.

Usually A and B contradicts each other, but in this case A includes B as its part. So "but" which means contradiction should no be used.

Hi Hiromichi,

You are correct in you assessment. The sentence is wrong. It should be:

"But politically, her opposition came after Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, her main rival in public polls at the moment, had already drawn support from the left in part because of his long-held criticism of the deal. Mrs. Clinton, who talked positively about the deal in her memoir, “Hard Choices,” is now getting criticized for not only flip-flopping, but also for doing so after a candidate has gained steam among progressives."
