A metric is a standard of measurement for that which can be measured.
The headline suggests that if Trump were present, the topics of discussion would be predictable. Trump is the main rival and people know what points he will be attacked on and need to defend. Currently, no one else even matters besides him.
However, if Trump is not there then what will the remaining candidates talk about in order to gain votes? These talking points will be the metrics of the debate.
