What does 'cute' below mean?
His impatience in demanding their support has irked them only further: Mr. Trump huffed at a campaign stop over the weekend that Mr. Ryan was being “cute” about his endorsement. _________________ Hiromichi |

Hello Hiromichi,
It is difficult to interpret exactly what Mr. Trump meant. Cute is usually a word with a positive connotation, but in my experience as a native speaker it can sometimes be used in a negative way to describe behavior that is snarky, coy, or evasive. Based on the context of the sentence, "His impatience in demanding their support has irked them ...," I believe that he is using cute in this negative way. Another clue is that the word, cute, is placed inside of quotation marks, which are sometimes used informally to suggest that a word or phrase is stated in a sarcastic way.
I hope that this helps. |

Ted;
Really difficult. Trump is suggesting that Ryan is making himself seem too smart a guy?

Well, again, it is difficult to be sure. But I think Trump is suggesting that Ryan is not as strong and clear and quick with his support for Trump as Mr. Trump wants him to be. |
