On the first day of class many students are shy, quiet and maybe even scared to talk or be noticed. This is "ICE" as we call it. An icebreaker activity is an activity that will get the studetns to begin talking to eachother and getting to know eachother. This is usually done on the first day (days) of class in order to set the stage for a more lively class in which students will participate.
I always do icebreakers, and begin by openingn myself up (lead by example). I will tell the students a few stories about me and funny things that happened to me while learning languages over the years, tehy laugh and warm up to me, then ask me some more questions then in small groups do the same with other studtents.
This helps to get them over their inhibitions of speaking in front of others which is a step toward learning through usage and feedback.
There is an icebreaker activity online here http://canada-esl.com/lessonsmain/conversation/breaktheice.html
Bye for now and good luck.
