I'm a little behind the times, since I just started reading The Name of the Rose (actually it was written 8 years before I was born). About fifty pages into the book, I came across the word:
"Penitenziagite".
And I cannot find a meaning for this word anywhere.
I tried to Google it and the closest I found was the an instrumental song by that name.
Please e-mail me any information (this word might be Italian or Latin) at [email protected] |

My guess is that it's a word that the author invented. It probably doesn't have a "real" meaning, aside from the way it's used in the book. |
