Japanese nationals hostages ---- dirty threat is not permitted
In Iraq where the conflict between US/UK armies and armed crowds has continued, an astnishing incident happened. According to the news on 8th, three Japanese nationals were kidnapped by the group named "Saraya Almjahiden" ,which was threating, saying that they would kill the hostages if the Self Difence force wouldn't withdraw from Iraq within three days.
In the Videotape which was sent to the TV station, three hostages and their Visas were shooted. It is still not known where and how they were kidnapped. The actual situation of their organization and their purose are still obscure, too. If the abduction and threat are real, this is the serious situation for Japanese goveernment.
It will be one year on 9th since US/UK army destroyed the Hussain government. This is the first case that Japanese national was held as a hostage.
In Iraq, since 4th in March, hard-liners against US and US/UK army has repeadedly conflicted. On the other hand, US/UK army has begun their cleanup operation against hard-liners in earnest.
Both sides have been thinking of the process to transfer the sovereignty to tentative government led by Iraq nationals with the limit in the end of June. It is undeniable that recently the antipathy against the occupation by US/UK and countries which support the reconstruction of Iraq has increased.
At the night in 8th when the incident was reported, eight Korean were kidnapped and one English private citizen were reportedly restrained. The details is still not clear whether the organizations are connected, they are likely to respond to negotiation.
But although there is an antipathy against the occupation for one year and US/UK, it is never allowable to press Japan to withdraw the Self Defence Force by this dirty means.
The people who were reportedly kidnapped has nothing to do with their government directly. Additionally the incident like this in the result would delay the process to transfer the sovereignty, which most Iraq nationals desire. Dirty threat is not good for the reconstruction. International society wouldn't allow them.
Japanese government has been investigating why and how these three Japanese nationals went into Iraq and how they were kidnapped. US government was said to offere to cooperate.
Japanese government dispached the Self Defence Force to Samawa in order to support the reconstruction in Iraq to help the Iraq nationals after the war.
The group which commited this kidnapping reportedly commented that they had favored Japan. This kidnapping would make Japan and Japanese people an enemy against Iraq. It is against the benefit of all Iraq people. The kidnappers have to release the hostages soon. |

The 3 Japanese have been released as well as all the South Korean hostages. The Canadian citizen who is an Arab Syrian by nationality has also been released. The Czech have also been released. The Italian was murdered, and the American is still kept hostage as well as the Danish person they kidnapped. |

Two Japanese who were abducted by Iraq militia were released and protected safely. Following the release of three Japanese who were kidnapped before, this is really good news.
On the other hand, it is impressive that this case was used for good advertisement by Iraq militia. They could give the impression that the militia, who were called Iraq terrorists, were not atrocious but normal people who can be negotiated. And they could appeal the pitiable state of Iraq people. And they could give an impression that without the issue of Japan's self diffence force(JSDF),Iraq and Japan are not as in bad relationship as Iraq and US. Iraq militial wants JSDF ,which has cooperated with US, to withdraw from Iraq and at the same time they dont want to deteriorate the relation with Japan for the reconstruction of Iraq. The series of cases from the abduction to release can be said to be same as the plan of Iraq militia in the result.
However that may be, it is due to the Japanese government's resolute response that this case didn't result in the worst case but could be resolved.
Japanese government consistently had proclaimed that it wouldn't withdraw the JSDF from Iraq and it had made its best efforts to release the kidnapped Japanese.
Same kind of cases targeting Japanese people could happen in future. The government has to clarify the details of this case from the point of view to prevent them from reccurence. |
