Hi Zach,
In my experience, prepostions and articles are among the hardest issues to conquer in the English language. I know ESL speakers who speak and write better than 95% of native-speakers, yet they still make occasional mistakes in these areas. Not that it's a problem, it's just that it is notable bcause they use the language so well.
For your amended sentence, I don't know for sure if it is correct or not, but I think it is probably incorrect. The reason is that you are speaking about a general concept, that of physical condition, and thus an article would not be used. For certain, regardless of correctness, you will never hear a native-speaker using the second "a" in that sentence.
