Hi everybody:
Could you tell me what difference in meaning between following two sentences I read from my tofel textbook?
(1) I have got finals coming up next week,so for obvious reasons I will not be at the party this Sunday.
(2)I have got finals coming up next week,so for obvious reasons I will not at the party this Sunday.
ps: I erased "be" at the second sentence.
thank you |

You need that "be". The sentence is incorrect without it.
So, 1) is correct, but 2) is incorrect. |

(2)I have got finals coming up next week,so for obvious reasons I will not at the party this Sunday.
In this sentence, "for obvious reasons I will not at the party this Sunday" is a clause. For grammatical correctness, a clause must contain a "verb". Apparently, this sentence lacks a "verb", so it is grammatically incorrect. Therefore, the verb "be" should be put in the clause to make it grammatically correct. |
