Hi
I am from China, live in Beijing and am a adult learner. Recently I felt that I was hard to continue studying English and in my brain I m disturbing it. I know that I must listen to the English stuff, read kind of papers and memorize so many idioms and slang per day. But as a result of the effort, I don't think I have a good raise in English. etc....
So I hope that who can give me some guideline and suggestion to help me to jump this stump I faced. And I hope to communicate to each other here too.
thank you so much

Hi Wei,
A few thoughts...
1. Congratulate yourself - Your written English is already good enough that you can make yourself understood.
2. Be patient - It takes a lot of study over a long period of time for most adult learners to master English (to be as comfortable with it as a native-speaker).
3. Read a lot, looking up unfamiliar words in a dictionary - It takes a lot of time, but that's ok. Over time, you will need the dictionary less.
4. Buy a good dictionary of idioms and slang.
5. Don't worry too much about memorizing so many things. If you don't use them, you will probably forget them eventually anyway. Instead, when you find something new that has personal meaning for you, memorize that. You are more likely to use it and remember it.
6. Watch TV. If your listening ability is poor, start with children's programs. The English is more basic.
7. Most important, practice! Don't worry about making mistakes. The best is if you have an English speaker that you can converse with. But if that is not the case, at least practice speaking out loud to yourself... in the shower, driving in a car, mopping the floor, whatever. Listening practice would have to come from TV or some other medium.
Best of luck! |
