1. We exchange presents on Christmas Day.
2. We switch presents on Christmas Day.

#2 is not exactly like #1, right? Is #2 more like switching name tags on the presents?

3. Instead of bird-watching, now it is flowers you are looking at. People go to botanical gardens to look at flowers. Do you call this flower-gazing, flower-appreciation, or something else? Which is most correct?

Thanks.

Hi BMO,

The difference between sentences 1 and 2 is the direction the presents travel.

Quote:
1. We exchange presents on Christmas Day.

Presents go 'from' me and different presents come 'to' me

At least two people are involved - this sentence is basically saying:

I give you a present on Christmas Day
you give me a present on Christmas Day

Quote:
2. We switch presents on Christmas Day.

Here presents are not actually 'delivered' - you are correct BMO this is more like switching name tags - so we CHANGE the presents.

3. I'm afraid I haven't heard a particular term used for looking at flowers - has anyone else? we do talk of 'enjoying your garden' but I haven't heard of anyone flower-gazing or any term like that.

Helen
