Hello
When someone asks what day is today, can I answer either with the day of the month or with the day of the week?
Or can I only answer with the day of the week?
thanks in advance |

Hi Alexandra,
Many people ask this question when they really want to know the date. It's incorrect, even though common. So I would answer with the day of the week, and if they really want to know the date, they will then clarify.
What day is today? Sunday.
What's today's date? The 16th. (or... January 16th.)
or... What date is today?..
Hope that helps. |

Thank you Bud, it helped a lot.
Let me ask another question...
When I say, for example, "I do want", "do" works as an intensifier, right?
I almost wrote "it did help" in the first line. Would it be correct? I mean, does it work the same way in the simple past?
thanks. |

Yes, that would have been correct.
Glad it helped. |
