The kids will apply factoids in which they're interested to an entirely different subject on which they are working. figuring out how to sew and knit, and going to museums and plays and concerts and on hikes and picnic, which I am terribly short on.."

What do the sentences imply? Does the mother think she's not as knowledgable as her kids at some stuff?
