Could anyone explain teh *by name* part?

I don't know what prepon is, but to be something "by name" means that you are identified as that "something." Usually it is used to say that in fact, you are not really that "something." Often you will see the phrase as in/by name only. If the "only" is added, then it is definitely saying that you do not meet the qualifications of that "something."
Bernie, the office manager by name, is incompetent. Ted, a senior analyst, is the one who really runs the office.
King Leonard, our leader by name, is really only the chairwarmer for his eldsest son. |
