In a rush of excitement, I tried to rushed to the post office to make it in time before it shut down (close?).

Which one best describes it?
Thanks

I'm not quite sure what you are looking for.
If you use rush twice in a sentence it will sound awkward.
So,
In a rush of excitement I ran to the post office to try to get there before it closed, OR, shut (down)... If you say, I tried to rush you imply that something is preventing you from doing so. You don't need in time if you're saying, before it closed.
