See here: http://home.earthlink.net/~alpha-quadrant/vistas97.html

Basically, the sun will gradually grow hotter. So in 1 to 4 billion years, the Earth will grow hotter, the atmosphere will be blasted away over time, the oceans will boil away, and the Earth will be baked to a cinder (if it is not completely swallowed by a swelling red giant sun).

If you are looking for religious references, the only one I remember off the top of my head is this one:
2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare [burned up].

Unfortunately no one really can know the exact time and date. You see, the Vogon Planetary Demolition Fleet schedule is locked in a hypercube subspace filing cabinet somewhere on the planet Brunnen G. And even if we can get there (Alpha Centauri is our nearest station for the Galaxy Express 1138 line that runs by Brunnen G), the schedule is written in Vorlonese, and you know how cryptic they can be.

Those Vorlons are using stolen Soviet technology, the dirty rats.
It's Ford Prefect I'm worried about.
