Dear teachers:
*Add to* the resistance of the water rushing past it when the vessel is travelling at full speed, and the fact that the rudder may be subjected to sudden extra stresses imposed by heavy sea, it is easy to realize that the steering gear must be of trmendous strength.
What does "add to" mean?
