Pluss the numbers of 1453 (the year when ISTANBUL was conquered by a muslim ,Fatih,) , you will see why it is considered as unlucky the number.

1+4+5+3=13 that's it!

Here are the commonly held hypotheses, though there aren't really any facts to back these up ofcourse...

Twelve gods were invited to a banquet at Valhalla. Loki, the Evil One, god of mischief, had been left off the guest list but crashed the party, bringing the total number of attendees to 13. True to character, Loki raised hell by inciting Hod, the blind god of winter, to attack Balder the Good, who was a favorite of the gods. Hod took a spear of mistletoe offered by Loki and obediently hurled it at Balder, killing him instantly. All Valhalla grieved. And although one might take the moral of this story to be "Beware of uninvited guests bearing mistletoe," the Norse themselves apparently concluded that 13 people at a dinner party is just plain bad luck.

Also, the Bible tells us there were exactly 13 present at the Last Supper. One of the dinner guests disciples betrayed Jesus Christ, setting the stage for the Crucifixion.

that's great hayde.I knew the second hypotheses before. accroding to chiristian religion, at the party of jesus christ and his disciples, the thirteenth one named jinda who betrayed jesus, concluded with callolics to injure jesus. so Jesus was hang on a crucifixion and was hit nails on his hands.
so 13 is an unlucky number!! poor me, I was born in 13-4, an unlucky day! Rolling Eyes

But in China, 4 is a bad number for us. because 4 sounds like die.

My appartment is three-pair. in Chinese, it sounds like dead floor. But I am still alive. Nothing bad have happened since I moved into the appartment.

My friend in Toronto lives very near Chinatown. In his apartment, there is no 4th, 8th, or 13th floor Smile I understand that 四 and 死 have the same pronunciation (except for tone ofcourse), but why in China is 8 sometimes a bad number ??? I don't know why. When I went to China, many times 4 and 8 were skipped when numbering things.

I know that Chinese like 68 (meaning becoming rich) and dislike 86 (meaning the richness goes away). Do Chinese much money to have phone number cotaining 68 numbers.

I know another hypotheses about 13. Number 1 symbols fixedness and number 3 represents dynamics. The fixedness and dynamics can't stand near each other like water and fire. So Western people consider 13 an unlucky number.
