"Sympathy" both parties share a common understanding, normally through shared experiences.

"Empathy" one party imagines what it must be like to be the other party. Experiences are not shared.

Also, sympathy is usually more of an emotional response, while empathy is usually more of an intellectual response.

Your best friend is probably sympathetic when you feel bad.

A torturer or a psychologist would be empathic in their work.
