It comes from a very old American folk song: Home, Home on the Range. The range is the vast prairie in the midwest of the U.S. where ranchers herded cattle and farmers farmed. |

Why would anybody want to make a home on a vast prarie?
Am I being stupid? Or are they? |

They did it for free land, or at least cheap land. It was a chance for many people to start a new life or to be adventurous. |
