The unctuous man in the bar tried every cheap pickup line in the book, but Angela was not impressed.
What does 'unctuous' mean?
What does 'every cheap pickup line in the book' mean?
Thanks anybody. |

From Cambridge Dictionaries Online:
unctuous [Show phonetics]
adjective FORMAL DISAPPROVING
describes people or behaviour expressing too much praise, interest, friendliness, etc., in a way that is false and unpleasant:
(It's when a stranger starts talking to you and trying to act as if you were long-time best friends.)
pickup line - When a guy approaches a woman (often in a bar) with a clever (hopefully) thing to say to her to try to start a conversation.
cheap - in this case, obvious and not clever; very unoriginal
in the book - an imaginary book that contains all the cheap pickup lines known to man. |
