Can anybody help explain these three sentences? Are there any slight differences in meaning or impression? Which one is most considered natural English?
Which one is good for formal and informal English?
Lindsay Davenport outgunned Kim Clijsters at Wimbledon, winning a battle 6-3 6-7 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

All of them are good, Tala. The first and third sound equally natural to me, while the second is maybe a tad less natural-sounding. Still, it is a natural sentence. They all have the same meaning: the first and third emphasize "outgunned," I think, while the second stresses "won." The first and third work well either formally or informally, but perhaps the second works better formally... Just my opinions. |
