There are any books on the shelve there.

They are both used a lot.
The following is from a very basic grammar book. The advice will give you some direction, but not answer all of the questions you might have:
1. Use some in positive sentences.
2. Use any in negative sentences.
3. In most questions, we use any. (See #4 & 5 for exceptions)
Do you need any help?
Is there any snow in the forecast?
4. Some is usually used when offering things.
Would you like some coffee?
5. Some is usually used when asking for things.
Can you lend me some money?
