The GRE is the Graduate Record Exam, a test used to determine if you are qualified to enter Graduate School (to persue a Master's or Doctorate level degree). When I took it ages ago, it was divided into 3 parts (verbal/reading skills, math skills, and a problem solving section), each having a maximum score of 800 (though how it is scored is kind of wacky since you get 200 points just for entering your name correctly).
The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is used to determine if you are qualified to enter a regular University (to get a Bachelor's degree). When I took it a zillion years ago, it had 2 parts (verbal/reading, & math skills) each worth 800 points. Since then they have added an essay section.
In lieu of the SAT, some universities require the ACT(?) test which is similar in format to the SAT but is scored differently.
Note, these are not like Asian style university entrance exams with a pass/fail score. Your SAT or GRE scores are considered with many other factors (previous academic grades, related experience history, personal background, and so on) by the admissions board to determine your chance of successfully completing a degree program.
If you are not familiar with "scantron" fill-in-the-bubble test formats, you may want to take a Practice SAT or PreSAT to get a feel for the format before you take the real test.
What degree do you plan to get? |

Hey!
First of all, Thanks for replying
I plan to take a degree in economics, something like major in economics. I plan to do it in the US. I am currently doing my 1st year in junior college where I would sit for my "A" levels, somewhere next year. After the "A" level examination, I would go on to take our degree, a bachlors degree. So, question is, if I want to study in the US after my "A" levels, should I take the SAT or the GRE?
Oh yes!! I also heard that if yo score very well for the GRE examination, you can get a scholarship from universities in the USA to study there..... Is this also true? |

A junior college is typically 2 years, and you do not get a bachelors degree there. So if you plan to transfer to a U.S. university and get your bachelors degree there, then you need the SAT. If instead you plan to get your bachelors degree in your home country, then you need to take the GRE to get a masters degree in the U.S.

Sometimes, yes. If your tests and previous academics show that you have a high chance of success at the university, many universities will offer academic scholarships to help you attend. Almost every college or university will have a "financial aid" office to help you negotiate the maze of financial opportunities that are out there to assist struggling students. |
