a little cardboard stick with cotton
tufts on the ends, used to clean out
your ears. Q-tip is a brand name, but
the generic term is "cotton swab."

close toe, however, a cotton swab is not on a stick...it's simply a tuft of cotton used for other purposes.

you're thinking of cotton ball. a cotton swab is the generic name for q-tip.
