That is very much what I'm talking about Larry, but I should read Micheal Lewis before I comment further. I just can't help thinking that of all the thousands of words in the language, and all the ways we put them together, collocations and the like couldn't really account for enough to make that th...

I'm currently pre-reading for an MA TESOL,( yes, I purchased the books ahead of time and start in Feb ) and the texts are fascinating. Anyway, it's seems that grammar is comming back to the forefront, albeit in a new incarnat...

Seems an extremely openended definition. I was looking for some kind of notion of how far it must stray from a given norm before it is classed a dialect. Otherwise, we could say that the people who live one block over from me speak a different dialect.

Accent or Dialect?

We ruffians over at the Korean part of this board have been having a raging debate about accents and dialects. One person has found a distionary definition of a dialect that contains "accent, vocabulary, OR grammar", while the one I found reads "accent, vocabulary, AND grammar". I'm contending that ...

Dear kjoie, I have been teaching Korean freshmen for one and a half years. Indeed, if the course is compulsory ( English majors are different ) there may be some apathy to deal with. I find that rather than resorting to emotional appeals for them to apply themselves, I simply tie everything to thier...
