Thanks for your replies. We aren't quite surfing yet. I am having a hard time getting them all motivated to use the computer. But I am not giving up. One tip for anyone wanting to do this with their class- the teacher should keep a list of addresses and passwords for the class. I can't believe (alth...

writing 1

Hi, I am teaching a writing 1 class at a local community college. The students are from the neighborhood and don't have plans to matriculate. They have all taken and passed Grammar 1 and some have even taken Grammar 2. The college ordered "Get Ready to Write" to use in the class (I had no input). Th...

Hi, In response to your question about teaching phonics. This summer I was asked to teach a course on pronunciation. As an adjuct I just take what they give me and breathe a sigh of relief that I will be able to make the mortgage :D However, I do think that teaching phonics is, in some cases, necess...

Hi Revel, This is my first semester teaching explicit pronunciation. In my research (Teaching Pronunciation by Celce-Murcia) I came across a diagram that demonstrated how consanant cluster can be formed. It looked like this: /w/ /p/ /y/ /s/ /t/ /l/ /k/ /r/ Using lines it showed all of the possible c...

Student Presentations

Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas/advice on student presentations? I would like for my level 4 community college students to give a demonstration presentation. I have never done this before and would love any input from vets out there.

Thanks,

Mary Beth

text book

Hi Diana, The text book depends on the level of education your students have had. I like the Grammar Dimensions for students who have had formal education in their native countries. You might check with your sales rep. and see if he or she can recommend something for you. As far as activites go, you...

Hi- Basically it is a spelling issue and is most obvious in writing. However, I have even noticed in speaking. Some students will use "they are" instead of "there" (over correction?). My class has very little knowledge of grammar (although many are enrolled in a grammar class this semster). Most hav...

there/they're

thanks for the information. I have tried explaining the difference but notice that many students are still confusing the two. I guess I'll just keep correcting them and hopefully soon they will get it.

Thanks,

I have a very low level class as well and like to do a similar activity as Ali. I have a stuffed chicken that is actually a dog toy and whenever the class needs to move around we form a circle and toss the chicken. We practice what ever point we have been covering- asking and answering questions lik...
