Yes, exactly! See what I mean. I wasn't implying those were correct answers. Cheers. [edit] in case you were wondering, I've never said 'drunken' in my entire life that I can remember. For the adjective I say drunk, even if it's wrong.

However, there comes a point when students simply won't get any better unless they start to think about language in a different way. Well, amen. I talk about this with students. There is some language they can learn where rules are going to help them out. When a category arises where usage is the o...

How awkward and embarrassing!

Lorikeet: or falling and getting a black eye when you are teaching "purple." I've done both, but I've been teaching a long time. Heh heh My response: ha ha, yeah, I'm not that dedicated! But similarly, we talked in class about how the spelling of awkward is awkward. I suppose you could have d...

Definitely!

For business, I remember busi-ness.
But I have problems with definitely. I don't know if what I just typed is right. Also garauntee. Is that right?

I frequently spell awkward as akward, because the letters 'wkw' in the word seem awkward to me. There's more, but I can't remember at the momment.

Scenario

I wonder about the classroom dynamic, because I have a suggestion, but it may not work well for all dynamics. I run conversation classes for small groups (under eight) and run into the issue of repitition which can lead to boredom. My students get to know eachother well, so sometimes instead of aski...

Accents

I agree with your responses Jotham. Michigan is called the mid-west, but when it comes down to accents, we sound Canadian! I haven't heard Kansas-Speak. If it's like decent Cali-speak then we're in agreement. Yes, and all that terminology. I remember having "soda" and "pop" difficulties when I...

Midwest Vs. Other places.

Well, jotham interested me with his comment that a mid-west accent is considered neutral... I was born in California, lived there until I was 8 then spent from 8 to 18 in the mid-west (Michigan). When I returned to California, everyone asked where I was from because I had an accent. Now, I'm 36 and ...

American Here!

I'm an American, and once I caught an episode of "Growing Up Gotti" which is about the famous Gotti family (mafia). On that show they have subtitles, because ya can't understand a word they're saying most of the time. I don't know if that's a dialect. A lot of it is just unclear speech. But then if ...

Perhaps

You mentioned there are other instruments in the club besides drums. Drum club is wrong. Drumming club does not accurately describe what's happening either and leaves out the other wonderful intruments listed. Why is percussion considered strange or difficult? I would teach that to Kinder (any) stud...

Reverse the Situation

So reverse the situation, and think of me, an American teacher learning some Chinese. The tapes I'm using to learn Chinese highlight very specific pronunciation rules that I do well to follow. I practice, and I'm actually able to get the tones right after listening to a good tape of modeled Chinese ...

Interesting

This looks like a great topic. I hope it gets rolling. I would like to ask you, the original poster to include some examples in your post so that I have something to respond to specifically and so that we're all on the same page. There are vocabulary words that I teach that hit the students differen...
