I don't think the soup spilled over and if this is a book then the comment on the soup was just something in the background to make reference to. The comment about the soup probably was meant to show how someone or some people had something more important to do. Like if the person cooking had a roma...

Right

It could mean both you are right! What it actually means will depend on the context of the phrase or what was the situation surrounding the statement.

somewhat

I can tell this is from a book you are reading. It means that while people were busy doing something else a pot of soup bubbled away on the stove in the background. The phrase is used to create an image or setting in the back ground.

Stairs

This phrase means, as she was walking down the stairs she stop near or at the bottom because she was thinking of something. This thought caused her to "pause". The reason for the pause is the subject in the sentence and where she was on the stairs when she paused is not important.

A word big with fate!

This usually means that the words spoken or written by someone will a future impact on things to come.

What am I bid

If you are saying this to someone or a group of people it means what is what I am selling worth to you? How much will you pay me for this.
When you are asking for a bid it means you may not accept the immediate offer and ask a bid from someone else.

Waiting to read

These are pretty much the same questions I was going to ask but thought I would wait for a response to this thread. Can someone provide some experienced input?

Thanks in advance

BBA degree

Thanks for the advice Walrus. I have a BBA and am going through a TEFL course now. I am only semi retired as I am the silent partner for a small corp. I am just over 50 and really wondered how the lack of understanding the language would be a problem.
China does interest me though and thanks again

Thanks

Thanks Sally and double thanks for the comment on my age. I am not young but love kids and adventure. I have had my career and now I am going for my second at an age where I am still young enough to have an impact.
I appreciate your input.

Teach where?

Hello,
I am new to teaching and of course have a number of things to learn but I would first like to get some input on whether or not I should start with a position in South America where I know a little of the language (very little) or Asia where I have no clue.
Any advice would be apreciated
