Pregnancy lessons?
I teach adults at the mid-beginner level. One student in my smaller class (only three students, all women) is pregnant and would like to be able to ask the doctor questions without her husband always present. Does anybody know about easy lessons or easy readers dealing with pregnancy? The only thing...

Teaching TH to a Chinese speaker
Hi, I'm tutoring an adult student, very bright, who can make both TH sounds but sometimes slips and substitutes an S or a Z. She also has trouble remembering which sound to use where -- TH as in think, or as in then. Aside from tongue-twisters, which I will try, does anyone have any good ideas? Than...

Favorites?
Yes, I think that is a lot of my boss's objection, but I think it's based on theory rather than reality. My ESL and native-speaking students are in different classes and most likely wouldn't be aware of how I treat the other group. But I have seen a little hint of the problem inside my ESL classes. ...

Thanks
Thanks. I don't really doubt myself as much as I might appear to, but I also don't want to just set my feet in concrete because I want to keep my job, and learn as I go. I think one problem is that I live in a fairly non-diverse state and really enjoy the contact with people of different cultures an...

Yes, maybe
Yes, I think she's got issues but I still have to deal with her. We've since had more discussions and it seems that the concern is the difference between how I relate to ESL students vs. the native speakers who are in other classes in our program (I teach them, too). I wouldn't give the GED and dipl...

News for You
If you haven't found it yet, News for You is very good. It's a simplified weekly newspaper from New Readers Press. The only problem is that it isn't very timely; any sports stories you get will be general, not about specific games or series, because the scores would be old. But I've used it with Asi...

Boundaries for adult ed ESL teachers
Hi, I've been teaching for about three years in a small adult ed program with little direct guidance. Recently, my boss told me that I have "boundary issues" with my students. She wasn't alleging anything serious but just said that I'm friendlier with ESL students than with native speakers who I als...
