jairan,
Did you ever find the type of books you needed? I realize that my post is quite late in responding, but I would be equally interested in that sort of book. I teach at an agricultural university in Japan.

I used to teach in private HS in Japan. Had project classes similar to what Phil described. Two major group projects through the year. Debate topic. Students had to research the pros and cons, and then when they were assigned which one they were to stand for, they had to make their proposition and s...

recommendation for a writing textbook for science reports
I'm going to be teaching 3rd and 4th year university students a course called Writing Technical Reports. Students are all science majors in Japan. Any recommendations? Many will advance to master's degree programs and have to write lab reports, journal articles, and theses. Everything I have found s...

These types of jobs are pretty rare birds in Japan. If you haven't been here a while to make contacts and pick up a few PT jobs along these lines, you probably won't find any. Universities and Junior Colleges, etc. begin their school terms in April, so they usually advertise for jobs 6-12 months in ...

The exact same sort of activity done daily will bore kids, yes, but here in Japan, kids thrive on a consistent pattern of activities. So, if you give them the same routine daily, they will feel comfortable because they know what to expect. To keep 30 kids interested means doing things they enjoy whi...

If any of you know of an EFL textbook for the medical industry, please let me know. When I say EFL, I am referring to the Thai, Korean, Japanese , Iranian, or Chinese nurse/doctor who has remained in their respective country. Been having quite the time researching this for Japan. Look here for a fa...

Just who is using L1 -- you or the students -- and in what situations? I teach teens the same age, and high level ones at that sometimes. Let them use their L1 when having discussions with each other (forming opinions, for example), but when they have to practice pair work, of course, they must use ...

You can find a list of international schools at this web site. I can't promise which sites are in English. http://www.tokyowithkids.com/fyi/international_schools.html Having a passion for teaching something doesn't mean the employer will feel you are qualified. I have a master's degree in science, p...

when to omit "which is"
Sample sentence: Every year ozone disappears from the Antarctic, creating a hole that is dangerous to life on Earth. You could insert "which is" before the word creating, or leave it out. The meaning of the sentence is not lost. My question is, is there a rule for omitting or requiring such wording ...

I can give you a perspective on teaching in Japan. Been here for over seven years. You wrote: I have learned that many of these schools only teach using the English language. Surely they must need English speaking science teachers? Why do you figure they need English speaking teachers for science? J...

Senorita, The difficult thing is teaching them roots. I can easily enough teach them how to add prefixes and suffixes to existing words, but it is extremely hard to get across the concept of a root form, especially if it can't stand alone as a whole word. We do a typical lesson like this... I presen...
