3 articles to read before starting To Kill a Mockingbird
I have an assigment to find three expository articles that relate to a core text. I am not a teacher yet, but thought TKAM would be a good core text and then get some articles on the usual: The Depression, racism in the South in the 1930's, and maybe women's roles in the 1930's in the South. Well, e...

I take it that the Huddleston (An Intro to the Grammar of English) didn't do it for you then, Woody? Might I suggest one of the Quirk grammars instead? (SJ and Donnach swear by 'em). Reading that would sure beat beating yourself (and implicitly others) up about the "total" lack of an agreed/agreeab...

Isn't it, over a certain amount of time, that typos and incorrect grammar aren't simply wrong but fall more into the category of historical evidence of how the language has evolved (albeit in reverse since the errors are what's being memorialized)? I tend to see old-tyme spelling errors and typos as...

Thank you Eric18. I have been told by many people who work in education that public school teaching, as a profession, has always been a cyclical proposition, fluctuating according to the tides of demographics, budget, and other factors. I've also been told that everyone has known that a budget crisi...

Eric18, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the occupational outlook for secondary teachers (English) in the L.A. area in 2009? Also, have you heard about the proposed four-day workweek for teachers? I am not sure if it would affect you as a college professor or not, but I'd like to hear your...

There are supposedly 18 different types of metaphors,
is this one of them?
She hated shopping with the heat of a thousand suns.
Is "with the heat of a thousand suns" a metaphor? Could it possibly be an adverbial metaphor? Or is it not a metaphor at all, but rather an adverbial phrase?
Thanks,
Donna

The AHD appears to be calling "such" an adjective and "as" a preposition. (and the other dictionary too - probably the same person wrote both examples anyway). Thanks for the explanation. I know some of my questions seem so prescriptivist, but I'm really just grasping at whatever rules I can find t...

I think it varies from country to country and who has time to pursue these things. I think you can copy something for yourself and your students can copy for themselves but you can't make a mass copy for the whole class or all your classes. It might be easier to make a copy to go on the overhead pr...
