You're right, William ! The word "function" does seem to be misapplied. It should not be used unless referring to a thing that was DELIBERATELY CREATED or instituted for a useful purpose. (useful in the eyes of its creator ) Things like Cancer and Criminals are not created. They are more like mishap...
