Maybe English is incapable of viewing the future in any other way. Wade through this if you can: http://equinox.rutgers.edu/papers/WernerThesis.pdf but don't expect me to explain half of it. What I could understand was very good stuff. Branching and Broomsticks! Thanks for the tips. I too saw a lot...

The two posters in your link have a very similar style to each other. They could almost have been written by the same person. What's more they both sound uncannily just like.... let me think for a moment.... it'll come to me soon. Sorry, I forgot to have reported I asked the questions in several fo...

By going to proficiency classes instead of discussing English with people who give them. By asking straightforward Y/N questions: "Is it correct to say.........?" or "Are A and B the same? " or simple questions like "What's the difference between X and Y? " You'd be treated with the utmost respect ...

"As for the same future happening, different persons will see different degrees of certainty. You tell me "John is going to marry June", and I will pass the words to others, "John will marry June." As for John himself, he is so certain and will say, "I marry/am marrying June next weekend" "People a...

In our country, if a foreigner learns Chinese and speak our language poorly, we don't blame or "warn" her or him. Even if he/she sits on his/her ass all day and does nothing to improve his ability to speak English? Here is a small picture of the world. If you show weakness, others will tread on you...

No. No. It's extremely unlikely that anyone, having been told that John was going to marry June would then use "will" subsequently to pass the information on. It simply doesn't work like that. Nor is that present simple "I marry" adequate. It's not some ranking of certainty that determines which fu...

In our country, if a foreigner learns Chinese and speak our language poorly, we don't blame or "warn" her or him. The poorness is expected. We encourage them to speak or write more. I think this happens also in other countries. Actually, you can search my name and find my old discussions in some oth...

I'm not talking about plans. I'm talking about "The next leap year will happen in 2008" which seems as good if not better than "going to happen" and "is happening" . It's an odd use of a modal verb and all that implies. As for the same future happening, different persons will see different degrees ...
