Books still have a place.

Perhaps the right books might tempt them. Have you seen the Richmond series? The Teen Reader series? Or even my own e.books for download (check out the titles on my website).

ebooks in the classroom?

I would like to hear from any teachers that are using e.books in the classroom. I have produced six e.books, for learners of languages and I would like to know how teachers are using my books (or those by other e.book authors. If you'd like to know more about my latest e.book and check out the softw...

It certainly does. I would hate to think that e.books could replace normal books. I do think there is a niche that they can fill - and we are only just beginning to find out how big that niche can be.

The Edirol has so much potential! I'd love to hear from other teachers that use one.

IELTS - enthusiastic students wanted - free practice

We are currently working on some exciting new material for students studying for the IELTS exam. If you are planning to take, or have recently taken the IELTS exam, we are confident that we can help you - and equally confident that you can help us. We only need 100 people so it will be on a first co...

Copyright

Hi Dawn,
The reason that there aren't many books on using music in the classroom is because of copyright problems. The publishers could get permission to quote various lyrics but that would be time consuming and would also be costly.

Murder Mystery classroom activity that works!

I use a murder mystery to practise the past continuous. I inform the group that a terrible crime has been committed - someone, the DOS? has been murdered. We have checked CCTV cameras and we know exactly what everyone was doing. I have them written out on strips of paper. I hand out the strips so th...

Comparatives - fun activity

Get a number of photos of a well known singer, sports personality that your students will know. Make sure that the person has had a reasonably long career. Hand out pictures to the students who have to decide the correct chronological order of the pictures. I have 9 pictures of David Beckham (excell...

Many countries have the potential to do so - but why do it? I am not a fan of buzzwords. They come and go and ships and sheep in the night.

I agree

Thanks Zhusha, you say 'without paying too much money'. Have you ever paid for an e.book? There are many books being offered for free - it won't be easy to get people to pay for them. Having said that, I've just produced my first e.book: http://www.ebook.com/eBooks/Foreign_Languages/Learn_French_Wit...

Concordance

What delightfully flowery English Shuo Yang uses! Yes, I use concordance software with my students. I am an 'extremist' who doesn't use the L1 in the classroom. I was challenged by a French teacher to explain the word 'though' without using a translation. I printed out a sheet of sentences which all...

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon is written from the perspective of a 15 year old autistic boy - a fantastic book and the English is comparatively simple. A great read for children and adults.

Try to convince me about CLIL

CLIL, Content and Language Integrated Learning, seems all the rage at the moment and the EU is throwing money at it, training physics teachers from Lithuania to teach at least a proportion of their subject in English. Lithuanian Universities (and many others across Europe) now only offer courses in ...

Make your own!

There are lots of karaoke style CDs available. I get my students to perform the song to assist other students whose language abilities may not be as good - and I video them. Songs like, I can sing a rainbow, If I had a hammer, Summertime, are nice easy songs, the students can spend about 45 minutes ...

English proverbs

Asked to write a short text to illustrate an English proverb, one Egyptian student wrote about the difficulties he had meeting girls. But, on a Thursday afternoon, if you're lucky, under the tree next to the chemistry department there are sometimes some girls sitting there and you can talk to them....
