Well, I was a english major before. From my view, it's a matter of class culture or atmophere. If your class is as slient as a ghost ship, then some one has to be a ice breaker. Then things will be better. It did work in my class before. try it.

you just pointed out the point i feel coufused. ' let's go play chess.' and 'let's go shopping' are both right. but how can i explain that to my students?

I just teach the topic "Let's do something'. However, I am confused of its usage. Should i say, "let's go play or let's go playing"?
