No I think you understand it well. One of the issues I find with many ESL teachers is, ironically, a "they should be like us" attitude. So, in that light one would hold the L2's culture as inferior.... I can't tell you how many times I've heard "they have to ask themselves why they came here". From ...

I agree, however there seems to be a on going debate related to content vs process. Also, there is this Freirean concept of cultural invasion. I think Hirsch's point is quite valid, but concepts are harder to apply in the real world. This is where teacher skill enters the picture. If teaching Englis...

Is there room for Cultural Literacy in our teaching methods?

Hello all: I am currently working on my Masters in Adult Education, and my focus is Critical ESL Instruction. One of the issues we deal with in ESL is boosting up the literacy levels of our students. In my research, I came across the work of E. D. Hirsch. Hirsch's focus is on increasing the literacy...

Teaching to Korean Students via Net

Hello, I have been offered a position tutoring ESL students via the web. As a requirement for employment I have been asked to supply a copy of my degree ( logical since domestic locations ask for this ) and a copy of my passport photo. I was told that the passport photo is a requirement of the Korea...

KRizzo, I noticed that you do not indicate where you are teaching? Is this an ESL or EFL environment. I'm thinking it's an EFL. Sally's suggestion is a good one. One of the issues with ELF is that your class is the only class where the language is probably spoken, in an ESL environment you have the ...

Hello Hereinchina, I'll deal with the second question first: The phrase "one lump sum" generally in Canada is taken to mean " in one total amount, everything [ such as tax, freight, duty, those type of charges ] included in the price". "Paid in full" tends to mean fully paid, so, the sentence: " I p...

Fluffy, to be honest I'm finding I use the net more than the traditional non volatile data medium storage devices [ books ] but I do up date my old school collection about every 5 years. I think five years because a good dictionary is incredibly expensive.

Hi Fluffy, they seem to use a mix of GTM at higher levels to a form of Audiolingual at lower to mid ranges. My thesis is based on a Freirean / Wenger approach and the LA seems to fit nicely in the practice area that I am working on.

Again, wonderful posts. I agree with notion that teacher training may be the root of the "method" mindset.... North America seems to be predisposed to the concept of "methods". Fluffy I have read Richards and Rogers on the distinguishing attributes of methods and approaches, I think LA is, now, clos...

Anyone use the Lexical Method?

Hello: I've been thinking about using the Lexical Method, but I can't seem to find anyone who actually uses it [ I am an ESL instructor teaching in Canada ] just wondering if anyone has or is using it? If so, any limitations, pitfalls, and how accepting are the students. From a delivery perspective,...

Hi Michelle, if your students are temporary, then how long is their stay here [ I'm a Canadian also ]? I am intuiting that they are here on work visas, so if that is the case maybe the best approach is to develop your blog around life skills [ such as shopping, taking the bus etc. ] and their work e...
