help with a "global" learner
I have a private class with a woman who I'm having a hard time developing a method with. She's considered to be an advanced student in that she speaks really fluently, understands a TON of vocabulary and hears really really well. The problem is that her writing is HORRIBLE and she makes a lot of ele...

"in use" = passive voice?
So I was teaching the passive voice the other day and there was an article where they had to circle all of the ocurrances of the passive voice. I'd taught them the formula: to be+past participle. As we were checking one of my students pointed out the occurance of the sentence, "These machines were i...

Thanks for your advice. You're totally right.....but this all brings up another point I've been thinking about. How do you know the difference between a student who is embarassed or shy with the language and therefore doesn't try ---AND--- someone who just has behavior problems and is very smart but...

One is really smart and a very good student. She always tries hard and speaks always in English. I'd even go as far as to say she's an...

1-1 Kid classes! Help!
All of the websites I see and games I find are all geared for groups. I have 2 private classes with kids (age 11) and I'm dying for ideas to keep them interested. They're too old for silly kid songs but not old enough for their attention spans to be longer than 1 minute so we can hold a conversation...

yeah, a friend of mine gave me the same solution. i tried it this last lesson and it worked really well. Though i don´t want to spend the entire lesson doing written work (they do enough of that in school), i figure we can do some in the beginning and then focus the end on speaking. thanks for the h...

hey thanks for the suggestions. However, I have a new problem with these kids. The boy is SMART and knows a lot of English. . . the girl, however, knows hardly anything and won´t ever try and learn because she waits all the time for her brother to give her the answers, even though I try to prevent t...

speaking exercises for kids
I am tutoring some lovely kids here in Spain. They have lots of written work that they´ve done in school....their parents want them using the language outside class....in other words, they want them speaking. I need some ideas to get them speaking, using short sentences, vocab, etc. They are 7 and 1...
