Hi Warwick. Well, as far as the radio station is concerned, we're too poor for that! :) But writing about cultures sounds interesting especially since your students are native speakers of English. I have more or less ten 11-year-old students who are quite fluent and would be interested in writing ab...

After experimenting with this and that, I think that this is the safest way to continue. The problem is we're assuming they'll do the work, quietly, with little supervision. But they don't do the work quietly etc and I'm sorry to say I just cannot work this way... Anyway, I won't get into details as...

Dolch words
I'm not familiar with what we call "phonics" and have just begun to read about it. I came across the Dolch words in the internet and saw that they're primarily addressed to native speakers of English. How can they be of use in the EFL classroom? My pupils know just a few words at the age of 8 and so...

Writing stories with children
I've read some messages mentioning students writing and illustrating stories once specific vocab is taught. For example, after being taught simple structures such as: "The dog is near the chair" or "The balloon is blue" or "Mary is short", students are asked to write and illustrate a story using wha...

Teaching "mixed" classes
Hello again. This year I have to teach what we call here "mixed classes",that is, have 9 + 10 yr-olds in the classroom at the same time. I'll have to do that with a) 9 + 10 yr-olds and b) 11 + 12 yr-olds, two days a week, 2 lessons each group. One 2-hour lesson (day 1) and a 45-minute one(day 2). Th...

Well, these kids here like rap-like songs etc but funnily enough, they don't mind "babyish" songs. OK, Mc Donald's farm song is not really one of my favourites but Head + Shoulders works fine with 3rd graders (9 yrs). Or, another example, when I was looking at the OUP site for Halloween material, I ...

Young children (8-9) over here do not listen to English songs because it is much easier for them to relate to greek pop music. Of course, there are greek bands that use english lyrics and we can work on that if they happen to like a particular song. I don't think I could use MTV or something similar...

Children over here listen mostly to greek pop music and ... other kinds of greek music. If I ask them to bring their favourite songs in class, I don't think we'll have the chance to practise English at all. I don't know ... you may have an idea on that as usual :) . Anyway, I cannot do such a thing ...

Another question on finding songs
Hello again. The problem: I have no CDs or cassettes with relatively easy songs for children aged 9-10 (wrong, I have one with Christmas songs), the school cannot buy any (that's a fact...) and I really cannot afford to buy some myself. Can you suggest sites with free downloads? I know that official...

Introducing grammar
Hello again. Suppose (again) you start a new unit in your coursebook and this deals with a new grammatical point (eg. some/any, present simple etc). Children are 10-12. There's only a text or a dialogue in your book, no grammar explanation, no examples, nothing, just that piece of writing. You can, ...
