let us not forget that parents have a voice as well.... many ELL parents do not know their rights and are too often led in the wrong direction..... educators must present them with the knowledge that will lead to changes when needed.... one voice is heard,,, many voices create changes....

Language Policy through the Facilitator Model"

The Facilitator Model surely sounds great. I have never seen our "certified" ESL teacher faciliate anything in my school. I would assume that a "true" ESL teacher would want to moniter all ELL's. I would assume that a "true" ESL teacher would attempt to offer her expertise with all teachers who teac...

Bilingual or English only

What is the overall goal in BE? Is it to teach children their native tongue-with some English? Is it to have children eventually, someday, with years, become fluent enough in English to leave BE? When they do leave we send them away and hope that they have learned enough English to fair off just as ...

I have often thought of creating a Pen-Pal classroom. I know it would be easy to reach out to schools here in the U.S. My desire is to connect with other countries so our children in the U.S. can travel to a foreign country via the web. I would want my students to know that there are many other stud...

Helpful Handwriting Websites

Hello... not sure if you are still looking for some new writing websites, but educators are always looking for new sites. I have students from various countries. I've encountered many of them beginning to write letters from the bottom to the top. They even write their numbers this way. I've found ha...

Merit Pay!

Merit Pay--- I teach in an inner city 5th grade classroom. I have a classroom with two languages. Eleven out of the 25 students have just arrived with very little knowledge of academics in their native tongue. They are very low with their reading, writing, and math skills. DRA has placed a few on Le...

USA Curriculum

Hi.. it really depends on what state your sister is relocating to. Do her children speak English? If they do not they might be placed in an English classroom with an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher coming in for an hour each day to help with their English language learning. It might be he...

bilingual education

I have been working with ELL students for 3 years now nad I have noticed that when they are in the higher grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on they encounter critizism from the general population. This is largely due to their present inability to speak English. This does not enable them to make contact w...

I have a Bilingual 5th grade class. I am in dire need of Spanish chapter books for my students. I do print leveled reader books from Storytown but that is not the same. My English groups have access to leveled readers and a nice English library filled with chapter books. My Spanish group's access is...
