farther / further

Hi people!

I'd like to know what's the reason for "Are there any further questions"? being correct, and the following version, incorrect: "Are there any farther* questions?" If both words are accepted as the comparatives of "far", why is the last collocation not accepted?

Thanks a lot!

Inc. = Ltd.?

Hi people! I'd like to know whether the abbreviation "Inc." is the American equivalent for British "Ltd." And here's another question: If we should translate a legal document containing this word, from British English to American English (or viceversa), should we keep the term as part of the company...

pretend vs claim?

Hi everybody! I'd like to know whether the word "pretend" has another meaning apart from "to behave as if something is true when you know that it is not". For instance, "Jack pretends that we speak perfect English", meaning " Jack wants us / expects us to speak perfect English". If it couldn't be us...

a lot of hours?

Hi people! Although this sentence sounds rather awkward to me, I'd like to know whether it is usually stated in this way or not: We used to spend a lot of hours in the park, playing with a ball. I think it is grammatically correct, but is it frequently written or spoken in this way? What about: "We ...

disguise myself in...?

Hi people! Is it correct to say " I used to disguise myself in different costumes?" or rather "I used to disguise myself with different costumes"? The sentence reads on: "I used to disguise myself in different costumes and hats and also put on me make up." I'd rather say: "I used to disguise myself ...

brothers / sisters .... general term?

Hi everybody! I want to know if there exists a generic term to refer to brothers and sisters, as "children" or "kids" would be for sons / daughters. If I wanted to say how many brothers and sisters I have in all, which term could I use? e.g., I have two brothers and two sisters I have four ............

Customer VS client?

Hi everybody!

I was wondering whether there was any difference between the words "customer" and "client". If there is, could you explain the different contexts in which we use each one? Are there any collocations or fixed expressions?

Thanks a lot!

didn’t even get / got not even

Hi people! In Spanish, there's an expression used when we haven't been able to guess the answer to a riddle, or a multiple choice exercise, or a quiz. If, of all the questions, we haven't even been able to get ONE right, we would say: "No le pegué ni (siquiera) a una", of which I think the English e...

Hi guys! I was just wondering about the use of comparatives and superlatives with compound adjectives. Which would be the correct version? 1. He is more big-headed than his father. 2. He is bigger-headed than his father. The question applies also for such adjectives as big-hearted, well-disposed, we...

Hi guys! I was wondering if you could tell me when should I use "in" and when "on" the street. For example, I came across a friend of mine IN the street. There are three businesses ON the/this street. Cars were parked IN/ON the street.* Are they OK? Especially the last one, which is the correct prep...
