Larry,I'm sure you know how interesting/fascinating I find Michael Lewis approach but having gone through many textbooks ,I sometimes wonder if he's the only one who represents this approach (which by no means implies it's incorrect).... I would still love to have your and others say about Past Perf...

quote Give them examples, and more examples, and try to explain how the examples tie together, but get them to learn the examples, not the explanation. Now, Theoretically,I couldn't agree more but with my students it always ends up with their insisting on getting "the rules".... As for Past Perfect ...

Hello, Let me give you a different perspective. While I'm constantly envious of you , native English teachers ,I think that sometimes you lack the understanding to "our" problems.Being taught English myself, according to "rules" (You don't like this word,Larry,ah?...),I must say that I'm expected tod...

Murphy is definitely my favourite grammar book.In fact I checked others but I feel he's very clear and the exercises are really good and helpful. On the other hand ,my CELTA tutor always said that choosing a grammar book for teacing and studying , is something personal .There are some good ones, yet...

That's exactly the point i.e. to make a lesson interesting and stimulating. The question that is left then is whether we can achieve it only with games ....
Well,I certainly go with Larry,Neil and Strider in this matter....

I agree with you Larry (again...) Not only because authentic material raises the students' level of awareness of the language but also for the simple fact that I find it interesting... Of course there is a lot of stuff that might interest my students and bore me BUT I found out that material that I ...

games

Hello all, I also used to struggle with the concept of games.Even in the days of my CELTA course,I felt that too much emphasis was put on games.Maybe because of my unsuccessful experience with Spanish course, where games were misused and boring .... Now I feel more in favour of games as long as they...

Thank you,Larry
you're always helpful.

I think now that lexical items are forming the collocations. So I guess, the two are the same. Also,it seems to me that every word can be "collocated".Isn't it so?

Can someone enlighten me ...? what is the difference between collocations and lexical words??? Are collocations lexical words that don't come "naturally" i.e. more complex combinations?....

Thanks

Ignorant me....

Joanne "Or how about, 'I'll have the steak' There's only one steak?" I thought that "the" here, doesn't imply there's only one steak but that it's the steak that is already familiar ,being on the menu.... Also,I agree with Larry Latham-this discussion is stimulating and so are some others.... I must...

Thank You.
My mistake of course .Something I studied many years ago (I still have a book that says the same...).
Well,I went over some other Grammar books and ...yes... adverbs can modify verbs, as well as adjectives and adverbs....
I'm so embarrassed
