Good assessment tools for tutoring intake?
Is there a good general "intake assessment" test I can buy, in book or software form, to administer to new tutoring students that will help identify their level and help us to pinpoint the specific grammar points or structures (or other areas, such as deficits in pronunciation) they need to work on?...

have students set goals and see their own progress
I believe that one of the things that will improve a student's attitude the most is the observation that he or she is making progress. If you can help your students set individual, concrete goals that are relevant to their lives(such as, "By the end of the week I will be able to use these 20 new voc...

good book to help with business/meeting language/etiquette?
I have a tutoring client who has lived in the U.S. for many years but is not confident in her English. Her goal in hiring me is to feel more comfortable and function better at her mid-level high-tech job. At our initial meeting she said that she doesn't know how to make herself heard in a meeting or...

helping advanced students improve spontaneous grammar
My advanced one-on-one tutoring student, a PhD research fellow, has said that he would like to work on correct grammar in speaking. I have another prospective set of students who are professionals with a similar need. They are from a variety of Asian countries. Does anyone have any tips or reference...

information gap activities and "mingles"
A couple more suggestions for getting students to communicate verbally are information gap exercises and "mingle" activities (where you provide one question per student and then students must walk around the classroom, asking each other their questions, getting an answer, and then exchanging questio...

That gives me an idea for another song
The suggestion to have the students play a boasting game made me think of another "comparatives" song -- how about "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better" from the musical Annie Get Your Gun ? I'll have to try that some time. Here are the words: ANNIE OAKLEY and FRANK BUTLER sing: Anything you can do,...

Thanks! and what I chose
Thank you for all those suggestions! I really appreciate it. I settled on a different song, though, and I think it's a good one -- "Strangers in the Night." Easy repetitive lyrics, it's about romantic love, and it's a nice tune. And I can teach the expression "love at first sight." :-) Also some of ...

A couple of songs
My Love by Petula Clark (My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine, softer than a sign)
More by Bobby Darin.
I'm sure there are ... more ... but I can't think of any right now.

recommend love song for Valentine's Day (beginner adults)
I want to play a love song for my students on Valentine's Day. My class is a high beginning level class of adult students. It's important that the lyrics be grammatical and accessible to students at their level. I much prefer a successful popular song (as opposed to a song written for English study....

any program to create clock faces?
Is there a cheap or free program or site out there that will create analog clock faces showing whatever time I enter? I want to create clock images and have my students practice telling the time to each other.
