I'm looking for advice on teaching IELTS Task 1 and 2 writing on the board using the book's sample answer, but also adding tips like:

avoiding repetition of vocab
using higher level vocab

Any ideas and methods in presentation of the writing and any other tips?

Thank you.

Need Out-Loud Reading Material for Pronunciation

I need reading material to be read out loud by corporate adults. I have good material but I've used it all up with this class. I'm looking for short, simple, but pithy passages, with a focus on certain sounds such as long [eee] sounds and final [-s] and final [-z]. I've scoured google, but the mater...

Thanks, Sally O.

This is a good idea.

What I think my students need to understand is that the TOEFL is not going to change.

They want to take the course, and get a certain score.

Boring? Maybe. But they "gotta do the work."

Thanks.

Activities/Games for a TOEFL class

I've been teaching TOEFL for years, and I am looking for brief activities that are TOEFL iBT based just to inject some life into the bored students.

Anyone have any ideas? It's for speaking. TOEFL relevant, TOEFL-centered activities?

Thanks.

Converation Class Ideas - Lower Level Adults

I've been getting material on the web for this class. Some has been useful.

In this class, a textbook is not used. It's based on topics and some supplemental material.

If anyone has any activities or sites or ideas that have worked, I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks, Brian

Looking for a Good Superlative Warmer

Hi, quick question for anyone who can answer.

For adults, age early 20s:

I am looking for a superlative adjective warmer. It can be personalized to the local nation/city/singer.

Is there any fun way to do something fun as a warmer with this topic.

I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated.

I prefer: I haven't given her my number. I've never given her my number. I have never given her my number. I haven't given her my number yet. American English uses that awful simple past plus "yet" construction ("I didn't give her my number yet,"), but I would never use it. Thanks for the response ...

I've Never.....Yet

Today I heard this statement from a student:

"I've never given her my number, yet."

I stated that this is better:

"I didn't give her my number yet."

"I've never....yet" is grammatically correct, no?

But it's awkward, right?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

I had never heard that there was a difference between a mistake and an error until a certain trainer of mine brought it up. A mistake is a wrong response that if you thought about it you would realize is wrong. An error is a wrong response because you have no knowledge about what the right answer i...

Mistake Vs. Error - definition

I should know this, and I've searched.

But I don't know the technical difference.

(If this is not appropriate for Pronunciation, apologies.)

Can anyone provide any definitions, examples, and possible links?

Thanks, B.

Lorikeet and EH, Great question, on whether he lisps in Korean. I've been trying to listen for the "s" and/or "th" lisp sound when he speeks to his parents at the end of the lesson. I'll find out Tuesday. I also want to be more direct, and just ask but I want to wait until I know. Thanks a lot for t...

Private student witl lisp

I have a private Korean student with fairly good pronunciation.

But he has a lisp.

The "s" sound is pronounced as the "th" sound in "third," or "Earth."

Any ideas on:

1. How to approach it, and

2. What exercises can be done?

Will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It is really hard to teach anyone you know intimately anything, like children or a husband or parents. It is a different role to be a teacher but you can be supportive and find others who you know will suite your husband's personality to teach him if he really wants to learn. If he is an adult and ...
