Please feel free to include any useful strategies and/or techniques that you have found benefical. I know that the best thing is probably just to get ...

Lorikeet, Thank you for responding. I enjoyed your ideas about using pictures, objects, and flashcards to help students learn. We need more responses and suggestions from people like you you have experience. Please feel free to offer any other suggestions you might have or have heard about. Thank yo...

Genie, You have a very good point!! I never thought about students using other languages to talk about the teacher or other students. And I agree with you that they should be able to speak their native language some in the classroom, like at free time. My suggestion is that you could learn some word...

Genie, Thanks for your reply. Do you know any Spanish? Is it required to work with the adults. I just wondered if helping out was available to anyone or if you were going to get to help because they were your friends. Also, because your friends have a Spanish major and minor, I didn't know if you ha...

Blanca, I must agree with Itza that if your students only speak Spanish, instruction should be provided in Spanish. You are at an advantage though because you can speak their language and can relate to them. However, eventually I think English can be introduced to them as the year goes on. You may n...

Itza, Hey girl! I have the same concerns as you. However, I am still a student as well so the only suggestions I can give is to use the TEKS as a guideline. Also, when you do start working in a school district, I doubt you will be the first ESL teacher they have so hopefully others will be able to a...

Ruth, I agree with you that instruction should begin at a younger age. I too think it will be easier for students to start young and build onto the language as they get older. As far as the older students getting 30 minutes of English instruction, that can't be close to enough time. And how many of ...

Blanca, Although I'm still a student like yourself, I have the same concerns. However, a friend of mine teaches ESL and said that in the first school district where she tought, the other teachers helped her plan her assignments. They were very helpful and answered any questions she had. So hopefully...

helping out NOW!!

Hey everyone! I just feel motivated to start helping out now anyway I can. I don't want to have to wait until I become a teacher to help. Mary Pipher's book has really inspired me. I was wondering if there was anyplace in this area where I could go and help out or work with ESL students or familes. ...

Leslie, I was wondering the same thing you are. Although I cannot tell from experience in the classroom because I am still a student, I can tell you that a friend of mine teaches in the Austin area, and she said that all of the teachers in her district are now required to get their ESL certification...

Implementing ESL/Bilingual Instruction in the classroom

Hello everyone! As a college student who doesn't have much experience in the public school classroom, I was just curious about how you include ESL/Bilingual instruction in your classroom. I used to work at a preschool in Tyler, TX that taught Spanish during the school year. The Spanish teacher would...
