Yes, BBS means the same in English & in Japanese, though most Japanese BBS' are simpler than English ones.

"Board" is used as a shortened form as well, and "forum/forums."

In America, students refer to their teachers as "Mr./Mrs. Lastname," not by their first name (unless you are a teacher at a daycare center).
