Thank you so much Fireworks, I agree with you in that you need to be prepared for class. I never did like it when my teacher would come in and not be ready to teach us and not have anything out. This is even more the case with ESL, I feel that I need to be very prepared everyday in my class. Thank y...

I agree with everyone and I think that if you keep learning their language it can help make you a better teacher. Letting the students teach you their language will help you, because I have taken Spanish in college and what I can speak is a little different than what my friends speak. Just keep an o...

Leslie, I can not answer that, but I do know as far as these classes, it can help you better understand where they come from so that you can better educated them. I think that we are making a good choice becoming ESL certified. I can see the benefits in our future. I hope that somebody can give us s...

much needed advice for our future
I would like to hear any advice from other ESL teachers about what to expect in my near future with dealing with non-English speakers. I am very excited about this and this forum has been a great help with getting me prepared. If anyone can give some advice please do so. Thank you so much.

Genie you have a good point and I agree with Jen. It would help if you could take some Spanish classes. I have taken two years and I can pick up most of what they say. Just listen closely to what ever language is being spoken and watch their face for expression, you can usually tell when they are ma...

Teaching multiple cultures at once
I was wondering if anyone has ever had taught more than one culture in a classroom at one time? I can not see trying to teach students with different languages in one class. Is there any advice that you can give me that would help me as a future ESL teacher.

I am also a new student in ESL, and I would like to know how to work with students with different cultures. I am a little nervous about helping them, but I also can not wait to try. I would like to know how you learn enough about their culture that you do not disrespect them the first time you meet ...

I can also remember taking Spanish when I was in High School, and I did not really care about learning it. All we did was listen to tapes and repeat after our teacher. The class was full of students that could speak spanish and just wanted an easy "A". I wish that I would have taken the time then to...
