Transfer of learning
Why doesn't my student use the lessons he learned when he talks? For instance: In one lesson my student practiced asking yes/no questions. I asked which form of question he prefers - 1. Are you hungry? 2. You are hungry? 3. You are hungry, aren't you? He said he wanted to use no. 1 format, but when ...

Thank you very much for your insights. They are very useful. I think one reason why students forget what they learn is that teachers try to teach too much in just a short time. Don't you think that students should learn more slowly. I have read that experienced teachers cover a coursebook four times...

He performed a matching type activity, used the words in a sentence, and identified the words based on my description. I thought he really learned the words well, but when I gave him a paper and penc...

Conflicting TESL Theories
I have been studying TESL theories, but many of them seem conflicting. I have a lot of questions about them. As experienced teachers, what do you think about the following conflicts: 1. Should we teach all aspects of English (reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation) whether ...

20-hour Intensive English Course
Soon I might be assigned to conduct a 20-hour intensive English course for a small class of professionals who want to improve their English. The sessions will run for 2 hours two times a week. Therefore there will be ten meetings. I was told that the content of the course is up to me. I was also tol...

I had the same experience. when I conducted conversation sessions, I feel that something is missing. I doesn't seem enough. I asked this forum about my problem. One reply told me that speaking is not learning, but mere practice of what is learned. Students do not learn anything from speaking; they j...

Reading Activities
What is the purpose of reading activities? Do you think students subconsciously acquire grammatical rules when they read, or are reading activities conducted only to improve reading skills and comprehension?

I think you have to ask them first why they are studying English and what do they want to learn. Do they want to learn how write in a postcard in English or read street signs in English? It is also a good idea to determine their level of proficiency. If they have different levels and have no idea wi...

The communicative approach gives emphasis on spoken English. It is concerned with smoothness in speaking or fluency, not with correctness in grammar and pronunciation. In this approach, teachers encourage their students to speak a lot in the target language. The teachers don't correct the mistakes o...

First of all, you should find reading materials or a coursebook that is suitable to the level of your students. It will help if the coursebook has pre-reading and post reading activities. If none, you should provide some. Start with a pre-reading activity, whose purposes are: 1. to make the students...

Too many mistakes
When I speak with one of my university level students, I hear that he has so many mistakes. He has mistakes in word order, word choice, and tenses. There are also many missing words in his sentences. I wonder how can I even start to correct him. I want him to speak with perfect grammar.
