How about taking him out to different areas around his house and asking him to describe what he sees/knows. Take a notebook and a pencil and perhaps you might get an idea where he needs more guidance. Worked in China for me. Cheers

I've got 68-70 kids in each class. I have my own classroom, after bargaining for a year, so I can be a little more adaptable, no desks, no pencil cases, just 70 stools and the kids. Several of my Chinese colleagues are taking an English exam. As usual, the format is a gap fill with four alternatives. Govt school in china, Middle school, 2,000 kids aged 13-15, 27 x 40 min classes a week. I do a lot of Penny Ur stuff. And Boys v girls. Kids can't move about at all.
