I personally love Powerpoint, but that's just me. However, some of my classmates in my ESL class have used Prezi, and I think I comes off as very entertaining and captivating. I don't know if it's mentioned already, but pbs.org has some great ideas and quite a few interactive portions.

I feel group work is a great exercise if the teacher puts the groups together when some of the students are less motivated or lets them choose if they are motivated. In my personal experience with group work in high school and college, I took the brunt of the workload in many instances when the teac...

Thanks for asking this. I was just thinking about phrases that we use in English that are a "given" (For example, anyone from my area knows what "youse" means). I guess we just have they are explained these nuances.

Regional accents/phrases?

I would like to know if anyone has any helpful hints in regards to regional accents and phrases. I am from NJ, the southern part closer to Philadelphia, and I am very guilty of peppering my speech with "yo", "youse" and other incorrect words. Since my ESL students will deal with these phrases outsid...

Journals as assessment

In one of the classroom I've recently observed, the Biology teacher used journals as a form of assessment fo the students. I felt it was a wonderful idea, and I would like to use it in my own classroom eventually. What type of guidelines for each entry should I employ?

As a future Biology teacher at the high school level, I am all for hands-on projects. With activities like these, I feel like the students get a better feel for real world experience and the teacher can assess their learning without putting pressure on a student that might already have tremendous pr...

I believe a mixture of both would be ideal. That way, when the student has to sit and take a standard test, they know "how it goes" and can accomplish the test without feeling lost.

What advantage of group work do you think is most accurate?

I am currently working towards my master's degree and I found this list of advantages of group work. I would like to know what everyone believes is the best advantage of group work, particularly in dealing with ELL students. If you think of one that's not on the poll, feel free to add it!

Gauging difficulty in lesson planning

I'm looking for real world experience in dealing with how to gauge diffculty. In all of my textbooks they mention Krashen's i+1 principle of giving students just a bit more than they can handle, but they also make sure to mention this is "usually learned by experience. Would anyone like to give a fu...

As a fellow content area future teacher, I was wondering the same thing. I feel as though it will be difficult to teach Biology to students who cannot read or speak in English.

Thank you for your response, Sally. I think I have all three of those qualities you listed (I'm waiting on the verdict for my sense of humor), but it is good to know that the worst case scenario isn't always the right scenario, meaning that it might not be as bad as some say.

Teenagers!

As I future high school teacher, I understand that teaching teenagers can be a difficult task for many reasons (ability to process more intellectually, longer attention spans - or not, self-image issues, demand to be treated as adults, etc), and I am wondering what is the most pressing issue for tho...

Teaching Biology to ESL students

I was wondering if anyone has any advice or experience with teaching sciences (specifically Biology) to ESL students. I am currently in an ESL program, and I understand that I may encounter students who have limited English proficiency. I am just trying to wrap my head around teaching difficult conc...
