Everything you wanted to know about pictograms and lots of examples http://www.pictogram.se/products/8805-practicalapp_pictogram.pdf I don't know how useful this is as an approach although Bliss symbols have been used successfully with chimpanzees. It's still a codified language and as adults we fo...

Can my class interview yours via Skype?

EDIT: I rewrote this thread which now also appears on the Keypals forum. For many students of English, the only practice they get is with their classmates and their teacher. I want to give them plenty of opportunities to actually use their English to communicate with someone in real time--what lear...

Pardon the preamble, but I will answer your question. Your use of 'shopping' and 'favorite' suggests you need to put the horse in front of the cart--start with your students. The more you understand them, the less you'll concern yourself with methods. I'd urge you to work with your students to clar...

Room for comments? Well, with a condensed font, additional space after each line (allowing for translation), there'd be lots of space for comments on the right. Any ideas on including a (student) self-evaluation questions such as: How satisfied am I with my own personal progress in this course? ......

Sally's right. I still plan but rarely do things turn out exactly as predicted. One thing I forgot to ask is their level(s). A significantly mixed class would explain the attendance. Not much you can do about that. I'm a strong advocate of task-based learning. As I'd recently written on my 'Intercha...

I posted what I consider, quite a thorough set of Teacher Evaluation questions on the Student Forum. You're welcome to use it--if you like, I can translate it in Chinese for you as I plan to use it myself in the next little while. Search for my posts there and you'll find it. I was hoping to get a s...

I've been teaching for 10 yrs and mostly to kids. The private schools I've taught in mostly scrapped their adult programs. They failed to understand the adult language-learning market (here) in China and perhaps elsewhere in Asia. I don't envy your position, it's a bit like being a public school tea...

Wow! 50+ views but no replies? What--does nobody use the series or, conversely feel it doesn't need supplementing? Anyway, here's a link to the Placement Evaluation Guide which has the interview questions--it makes a good placement test even if you don't use the series: http://books.google.ca/books?...

Based on the fact you seem to have made a concerted effort and they still seem reluctant to engage, I have to agree with you--it's face. But let me ask you: a) Are they all about the same rank, age, gender? b) Do you detect any office politics at work that might dampen relationships between them? c)...

Teacher Evaluation Form (for students)

I'm trying to come up with an effective evaluation form for students to assess their teacher. I usually distribute a bilingual version of this in my own adult classes 1/2 way through the term. I'm pretty satisfied with this but if anyone has any input, I'd love to hear from you: Ratings: #1 = Excell...

If the above generalizations are not what you wanted, it's because you generalized about the problem. Try being more specific about the problem: 1. What level are your students and how many in your class? 2. What's the stated purpose of the course/students and is there a discrepancy there? 3. What s...
